Product description

A Hollywood-style drama

It is November 28, 1940, 05:13 pm, as a drama in the sky is being played out, which a Hollywood film couldn't have depicted better. Major Helmut Wick: youngest wing commander of the German Luftwaffe, highly decorated with 55 aerial victories to his credit, leading fighter ace of the year 1940, is flying at the head of his wing over the Isle of Wight in southern England. He takes up the fight with several Spitfires of the 609th Squadron Royal Air Force and shoots down Officer Baillon. This is his 56th victory! Seconds later British Flight Lieutenant John Charles Dundas, section leader of 609th Squadron, jumps behind Major Wick's Messerschmitt 109 E-4 and opens fire. Wick's aircraft is heavily damaged. Flight Lieutenant Dundas, one of the best fighter pilots in the Royal Air Force, calls on the radio: "Whopee! I've got a One Oh Nine!" But he didn't hear the congratulations of his wing leader for long. Rudolf Pflanz, wing man of Major Wick, got in position behind Dundas' Spitfire and let his guns rip. Flight Lieutenant Dundas plunged downward only a few seconds after Major Helmut Wick and like Helmut Wick was counted from that point as missing. The Richthofen Geschwader loses one of its most important and daring fighter commanders on this day. Major Helmut Wick is a legend, a role model. Flight Lieutenant Dundas makes himself immortal with this victory and at the same time dies. He is not able to enjoy his fame. He did not know who it was, he shot down.
